Ultimate Hair Extension Care Guide
This guide is designed to help you care for your Hair Wonderland extensions in the best way possible. Following these steps is crucial for ensuring longevity and maintaining the health of your natural hair.
In-Salon Maintenance
Hair extensions require regular in-salon maintenance every 5-6 weeks. If you have finer hair, your stylist may recommend coming in every 4 weeks.
Why Maintenance is Important:
- Leaving extensions in for too long can damage your natural hair.
- As your extensions grow, the section of natural hair they’re attached to becomes smaller due to daily shedding.
- During maintenance, we’ll re-section your hair to ensure the extensions are placed on a suitable, weighted section, protecting your natural hair.
If you want your natural hair to grow while wearing extensions, do not leave them in for longer than 6 weeks without maintenance.
At-Home Maintenance
Product Use:
- Use only hair care products recommended by your stylist.
- Extensions are 100% Remy European human hair, but they require moisture and care.
- Avoid products containing: protein, keratin, sulfates, and high alcohol content. These can damage your extensions and make them unmanageable after just one use.
Your stylist will recommend the right hair care products for your hair type and lifestyle before you leave the salon. Remember, extensions will only be covered under warranty for the first 6 weeks if you purchase the recommended products from The Hair and The Honey.
Morning Routine
- Brush your hair with an extension brush.
- If necessary, use a GHD or Cloud 9 for a quick style refresh (heat styling improves the look and feel of your extensions).
- Always apply a heat protectant spray before using heat tools.
- Apply 1-2 pumps of treatment oil through the mid-lengths and ends.
Evening Routine
- Before bed, brush your hair with an extension brush.
- Apply 2-3 pumps of treatment oil into the mid-lengths and ends every evening to replenish moisture.
- Sleep with your hair in a low, loose plait or ponytail.
Washing Routine
Important: USE ONLY HAIR CARE & TREATMENT RECOMMENDED BY THE HAIR & THE HONEY
- Brush your hair with an extension brush or tangle teaser before showering.
- Rinse your hair in warm water.
- Apply a small amount of recommended shampoo (20-50 cents size) to your scalp only. Lather and massage.
- Rinse and repeat to thoroughly clean the scalp.
- Apply the same amount of conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends, leaving it for 5 minutes. Aim to use a deep treatment mask weekly.
- Rinse with warm water, finishing with a cool rinse to close hair cuticles and retain moisture.
- Gently towel-dry by blotting—do not rub vigorously.
- Apply 2 pumps of argan oil to mid-lengths and ends.
- Use a heat protectant spray or blow-dry cream.
- Comb through with a tangle teaser or wide-tooth comb.
- Blow-dry on medium heat, avoiding contact with the extension bonds.
- Finish with heat styling as needed.
Remember: Never go to bed with wet hair!
Swimming Routine
- Detangle and brush your hair before swimming.
- Style hair in a low, loose plait or ponytail—avoid top knots or buns.
- Apply a leave-in cream or conditioner to create a barrier against salt or chlorine.
- After swimming, rinse well with fresh water and shampoo twice.
- Apply a treatment during your evening wash and leave it in as long as possible.
- Gently brush and comb through your hair, then apply argan oil before blow-drying.
Invisible Tape Extensions
- Hair must be freshly washed with a cleansing shampoo before application.
- Avoid washing hair for 48-72 hours after application.
- Only use sulfate-free hair care products; incorrect products can cause slippage.
- Wear hair in low ponytails for the first week.
- Do not pick at the edges of tape extensions. If they peel apart, do not attempt to remove them yourself.
- Return for maintenance within 5-6 weeks.
Important Reminders
- Hair extensions are dead hair and do not receive nutrients from your scalp. Avoid using products with protein, keratin, sulfates, and high alcohol contents.
- Wash hair 2-3 times a week only. Limit the use of toning/purple shampoos to once per fortnight.
- Heat styling is beneficial for extensions; always use high-quality tools like GHD or Cloud 9 with heat protectant spray.
- If any extensions fall out, keep them and bring them to your maintenance appointment.
- Avoid applying products or serums close to the bonds of the extensions.
Note: Hair extensions may need to be colored post-application. Do not color or bleach at home; only semi-permanent colors are acceptable.
If you experience discomfort, you may remove extensions for half price within the first two weeks.
